(Watch the Home Fire Sprinkler safety tips
One of my favorite things to do on a Saturday afternoon is to watch international
movies. I discovered the DVD of the motion picture Gigante on a display table at my local library recently and decided to give it a try.
Filmed in Uruguay, it is the story of a lonely, overweight supermarket security guard working the graveyard shift and his fixation with a pretty cleaning woman. As the movie unfolded, I found myself rooting for guy, hoping he’d get the nerve to ask the cleaning woman out and stop spending endless hours observing her on the security cameras and trailing herall over town after her shift ended. The character had my full support until a scene in which he tried to discourage a budding romance between the cleaning woman and a co-worker by setting off the store’s sprinkler system. Employees were soaked. Merchandise was ruined. The security guard was suspended.
Depictions like this reinforce myths to consumers about how a sprinkler system would operate in their homes. For the facts, see our home fire sprinkler safety information, including my new home fire sprinkler safety tips video, and all of our safety tips sheets.
