The frigid temperatures that have gripped much of the nation have led many of us to crank up the heat. As we try to stay warm in what are brutal conditions for many of us, let’s stay safe as well. According to NFPA’s most recent heating report, in 2011 heating equipment was involved in an estimated 53,600 home fires in the U.S., causing 400 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries.
As part of the “Put a Freeze on Winter Fires” campaign, NFPA and the United States Fire Administration want to make sure everyone uses heating equipment safely. NFPA’s Winter Freeze Checklist provides tips for addressing the cold. In addition, our heating safety information, heating safety tips sheet and videos provide valuable tools.
